Fisherman Ambrose Bonnar brings the child home to his wife Christine, and the pair adopt him and name him Brendan. The abandoned boy transforms the lives of a close-knit village in this lovely story (4/5 stars on Amazon) about fate, fortune, community and the hard realities of parenting. • Books September and November!

  • Tuesday, September 15, 2025, 6:30-8:30 pm; The Bogside Boys by best-selling author Eoin (Owen) Dempsey,© 2016, 253 pp. Historical fiction, this book is a meticulously-researched, nuanced family saga set over 25 years of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Mick Doherty has a secret, and it’s time to introduce her to his family. It’s not easy being with a girl from the other side of the divide. He knows that being with Melissa could prove impossible. Protestants and Catholics don’t mix. The march through Bogside will be the perfect time to introduce her to his twin brother Pat at least. Author Dempsey was born and raised in Ireland and now lives in Philadelphia. (Book recommended by Paula McGill)

Tuesday, November 18, 2025, 6:30-8:30 pm; Time of the Child by Niall Williams, released Nov. 19, 2024; 304 pp. From the author of This Is Happiness (which we read in May 2020), this is a compassionate, life-affirming novel about the Christmas season that transforms the small Irish town of Faha. Set over the course of December 1962 in the same small village as in his previous novel, Williams tells the tale of Doctor Jack Troy and his eldest daughter Ronnie whose lives are turned upside down when a baby is left in their care.
